What changed in Hololith

Every version with its build, date and changes, newest first.

Hololith 1.4.0

Latest

Build 18 ·

  • Review now shows when a video renders. A bar shows Preparing video, Blurring webcam and then the percent, with a Cancel button. When the render is done, Review shows the file name and a Show in Finder button.
  • The menu bar icon shows the render percent too, and the menu has Cancel Render. VoiceOver reads the render state. With Reduce Motion on, the bar does not move.
  • New: remove filler words. Click Find Filler Words in Review and Hololith finds um, uh, hmm, ah and er in your voice. Each filler shows as a marker on the waveform lane of the timeline.
  • Nothing is removed until you say so. Click Remove All Fillers, or click a marker to remove or keep that filler. List shows all fillers with Go To and a Remove switch. Keep All puts everything back.
  • Hololith cuts a removed filler from the video, the webcam, your voice and the system sound together, with a short fade so you hear no click. Preview skips the removed parts, and the export is shorter by the same time.
  • Filler word removal needs macOS 26 or later. On macOS 13, 14 and 15 the button is off and Review tells you why.
  • The first scan downloads the Apple speech model one time, and Review shows the download progress. The analysis runs on your Mac and nothing is uploaded.
  • Only the microphone track is analyzed. A recording without a microphone track cannot use filler word removal, and Review tells you so. The scan works with English speech.
  • The scan runs in the background, so Review stays responsive, and you can cancel it at any time. A 20 second recording takes about a quarter second once the model is on your Mac.
  • Export is faster. A 20 second recording with a blurred webcam bubble exported in 11.6 seconds, where it took 19.4 seconds before. The webcam step before the render went from 1.1 seconds to 0.1 seconds. Exported files can be about 8 percent larger.
  • The timeline makes its thumbnails in time order, from the left. A zoom step that needs 64 new thumbnails took 1.6 seconds, where it took 2.6 seconds before.

Hololith 1.3.0

Build 17 ·

  • Export to GIF is gone. A GIF of a 4K or 5K recording used too much memory and looked wrong at high resolutions. Export to MP4 or MOV instead. Your old GIF files stay where they are.
  • The recording bar redraws much less. It now updates about 60 times a minute, where it did 480 times before, and the microphone meter updates about 270 times a minute, where it did 700 before. Hololith uses less power during a recording.
  • The length of a recording is now counted exactly, also with pauses.
  • You can now move the recording bar with the teleprompter, microphone and webcam buttons. Drag it by its background. Hololith remembers the place for each display, and the bar stays on the screen when you change the resolution or unplug a display.
  • To put the bar back, choose Reset Recording Bar Position in the recording menu or in Settings, Recording.
  • You can now turn the recording bar off. Use Show recording bar in Settings, Recording or Hide Recording Bar in the recording menu. The bar is on by default.
  • With the bar off, a small indicator shows that you record. It shows a red dot, the time and a stop button. It is at the top right of the display you record, and you can drag it. It does not pulse and it is never in the recording.
  • VoiceOver reads the indicator with its state, Recording or Paused, and its time. With Reduce Motion on, the bar does not animate.
  • The side widget panel is a little shorter.
  • The screenshot editor now shows the whole picture inside the window. The window opens in the shape of your picture. A small picture is made larger to fit and a very large picture shows reduced, so you always see all of it.
  • When you zoom in, a pill at the corner of the picture shows the zoom level, for example 250%, and a Fit button. The status bar shows the zoom too.
  • Zoom with a pinch on the trackpad, with Command and the scroll wheel, or with Command plus and Command minus. Command 0 fits the picture again and Command 1 shows the real pixels. The zoom follows the pointer.
  • When you zoom in, scroll or drag with two fingers to move around. Hold Space and drag, or use the middle mouse button, to pan with any tool. The picture stays inside the window, so you cannot lose it.
  • The picture and the marks stay sharp at every zoom level, and the picture shows real pixels when you zoom in past 100 percent.
  • Command Z and Shift Command Z now undo and redo your marks in the editor. A text field that you edit keeps its own undo.
  • VoiceOver reads the zoom level in the editor. With Reduce Motion on, the editor does not animate.

Hololith 1.2.0

Build 16 ·

  • The timeline in Review is new. The video track shows thumbnails of your recording. Hololith makes them in the background, so Review stays quick, and it keeps them for the next time.
  • Below the video track there is now a lane with the waveform of your voice, so you can find where you talk and where it is quiet.
  • The in and out handles are wider and easier to grab. Two chips above the timeline show the in time and the out time as minutes, seconds and frames. A handle snaps to the playhead, to the start and to the end of the clip, and a thin guide line shows what it snapped to.
  • Move the pointer over the timeline and it shows the time at that place. Click or drag on the timeline to move the playhead.
  • Zoom the timeline with the plus and minus buttons, with a pinch on the trackpad or with the plus and minus keys. Press 0 or choose Fit to see the whole clip again. A small bar under the lanes shows which part you see, and you can drag it.
  • Keyboard control: click the timeline, then use the left and right arrow keys to move one frame and Shift with an arrow to move one second. I sets the in point at the playhead and O sets the out point. Space plays and pauses. Home and End go to the start and to the end. Z adds a zoom, Tab selects the next zoom and Delete removes the selected zoom.
  • VoiceOver reads each handle with its name and its time. Adjust a handle to move it one frame. The extra actions move it one second or to the playhead.
  • With Reduce Motion on, the timeline does not animate. The timeline text follows the Dynamic Type size when the system sets one.
  • Dragging the playhead or a handle on a 4K clip at 60 frames per second is much smoother. The picture follows the drag at once and the exact frame shows when you let go.
  • The timeline uses less processor time while the video plays, and a long recording with many keys and clicks no longer slows it down.
  • The times in Review are now exact. Before, 2.3 seconds could show as 2.2.
  • When Hololith cannot record the sound of your Mac, it now tells you at the start, and the recording continues without it. Before, the recording had no Mac sound and no message.
  • When Hololith cannot save your timeline edits, for example when the disk is full, it now tells you. Before, you could lose edits without a message.
  • The list of windows for window capture no longer includes the Dock and the menu bar.

Hololith 1.1.1

Build 15 ·

  • Hololith can now fix a permission that is on in System Settings but shows as off in Hololith. This happens when macOS gave the permission to a different build of Hololith than the one that runs now. Choose On already? Reset in Permissions, in Recording Setup or in the capture message. Hololith clears only its own old entry and asks again.
  • After you reset Screen Recording, macOS asks you to turn it on and Hololith relaunches by itself.
  • The Mic Mode button now works. It starts the microphone for up to one minute, so macOS can list Mic Mode in Control Center, and it opens Control Center.
  • Next to the button, Hololith shows the mode you chose and the mode macOS uses. If the microphone does not support the mode, Hololith says so.
  • Noise Reduction works as before. It makes the noise between words quieter, and the text now says so. Mic Mode is the macOS setting and Noise Reduction is the Hololith setting, and the two are now described apart.
  • The list of windows for window capture is now up to date. Before, a window you opened after the first capture was missing, and a window you closed could still show.

Hololith 1.1.0

Build 14 ·

  • New end clip for your exports. Turn on End clip in Review, next to Watermark, and Hololith adds 2.5 seconds with the Hololith mark and Made with Hololith after the out point.
  • The end clip works for MP4, MOV and GIF exports. It has the same size and frame rate as the export.
  • Choose one of four styles: Settle, Trace, Reveal or Horizon. Each tile in Review shows a live preview of its style.
  • The video fades into the end clip with Settle, Reveal and Horizon. Trace starts with a clean cut.
  • The sound stops at the out point, so the end clip is silent.
  • In Settings, Advanced, Export, choose if new exports get the end clip and which style they use. It is off by default, so your exports do not change until you turn it on.
  • When the end clip is on in Settings, the quick GIF from the Gallery gets it too.
  • With Reduce Motion on, the previews in Review do not move. The end clip in the export still moves.

Hololith 1.0.10

Build 13 ·

  • The microphone records your voice again. Since 1.0.7 a screen only recording, or a recording where you turned on the webcam after the start, had no sound when the chosen microphone was not the Mac microphone, for example a Logitech C920 webcam microphone.
  • Noise Reduction was not the cause and it works as in 1.0.7. With it on, the noise between words is about 17 dB quieter and the voice level does not change.
  • Hololith now records each microphone in its own format. If the format of the microphone changes during a recording, the recording continues with the voice.
  • The level meter in the window before a recording and in Recording Setup now shows the level of the chosen microphone in the same way.
  • If a microphone sends no sound, Hololith now tells you when the recording stops. Before, the recording had no voice and no message.

Hololith 1.0.9

Build 12 ·

  • The CAPTURE and RECORD buttons in the menu bar menu now work. In 1.0.6, 1.0.7 and 1.0.8 a click on them did nothing, because the click did not reach the button.
  • The buttons and lines of the command panel that the menu shortcut opens now get each click too.

Hololith 1.0.8

Build 11 ·

  • The webcam now turns off when nothing uses it. Before, the camera could stay on after you hid the webcam, closed the window before a recording or stopped a recording, and Hololith used more power and memory when idle.
  • A press on CAPTURE or RECORD in the menu bar menu now stops if you move the pointer off the button before you release it. The fix from 1.0.7 stays, so a normal click always works.
  • Accessibility now shows Optional instead of a red Missing. Only Auto scroll capture and the keystroke display need it.
  • When you come back to Hololith, the permissions update without Recheck. If you turn on Screen Recording later, Hololith still relaunches so capture works.
  • Hololith no longer asks to control other apps.
  • Hololith checks for updates when your Mac wakes and when you come back to Hololith, if the last check is more than 6 hours old.
  • The menu bar menu shows the version and build at the bottom, or Update available when a new version is ready.
  • The menu text now follows the system text size. At the default size it looks the same as before.
  • Hololith now writes a log for menu commands, captures, recordings and permissions. Open Console and search for cc.aperture.app.
  • The text that came in 1.0.7 can now be translated.

Hololith 1.0.7

Build 10 ·

  • The CAPTURE and RECORD buttons in the menu bar menu work again. In 1.0.6 a click on them did nothing and the menu stayed open.
  • Every menu bar command now starts after the menu closes, so the capture area does not close under the menu.
  • New Noise Reduction for the microphone. It is on by default. It removes low rumble and makes steady background noise, such as a fan, quieter when you do not speak. The sync of the voice with the video does not change.
  • Turn Noise Reduction on or off in Settings, Recording, in the window before a recording and in Recording Setup. The Mic Mode button opens the macOS microphone modes, such as Voice Isolation.
  • New Recording Setup guide. After you give the permissions on the first launch, it helps you choose the webcam with a live preview, the microphone with a live level meter and a voice check, the webcam size, shape and border, the frame rate, the webcam default, the cursor style and the side widget.
  • Each step saves only when you click Next. Skip keeps your settings. Back is always there. The camera and the microphone turn off when you leave their step or close the guide.
  • Recording Setup also has the Shortcuts, Capture, Record and Side Widget lessons of the old Setup Guide, so there is one guide only. Open it from the menu, Help, Recording Setup, or from Settings, General.

Hololith 1.0.6

Build 9 ·

  • When you mute the microphone or the system audio in Review, the export now leaves that track out. Before, the export had all audio tracks.
  • Delete in the Gallery now moves the item to the Trash. Press Command Z to put it back.
  • Clear Unstarred asks first, then moves the unstarred items to the Trash. Starred items stay.
  • Discard in Review is now at the left, away from Export. It asks first, then moves the recording to the Trash and removes it from the Gallery. Files that you exported stay.
  • Reset All Settings and Reset All Shortcuts ask first.
  • The menu bar menu, the menu that the menu shortcut opens and the new Dock menu now have the same commands, names and icons.
  • The menus show the shortcuts that you set in Settings, Shortcuts. Before, they always showed the default shortcuts.
  • You can use the arrow keys, Return and VoiceOver in the menu bar menu. A menu command now starts when you release the mouse button.
  • Hololith always keeps a way in. When you turn off the Dock icon, the menu bar icon comes back. A click on the Dock icon opens Settings when no Hololith window shows.
  • Command Comma opens the same Settings window as the menu.
  • Hololith now uses one name for each thing: Gallery, Star, Webcam, Capture Full Screen, Repeat Last Area, Annotate Screen and Reveal in Finder. The Annotations settings are now named Watermark.
  • The side widget is easier to read. CAPTURE has Window and Full Screen under it. RECORD has Screen + Webcam, Webcam Only and GIF under it.
  • During a recording, the side widget shows Recording or Paused, with Stop Recording and Pause Recording.
  • Right click or Control click the side widget for its options: the display, the edge, hide to a thin line, reset position, Settings and turn off.
  • The recording controls have a Pause button and show Paused. VoiceOver reads the name and the state of each control.
  • In the window before a recording, the mode sets the webcam. Only Last Region has its own Webcam switch.
  • The window before a recording now has all four frame rates, uses your microphone setting and starts in the mode of Show webcam by default.
  • The teleprompter setting in the window before a recording is saved only when you start the recording. The window now scrolls when it is too small for its content.
  • Review has one main Export button. The format, GIF export, GIF size, GIF frame rate and the Reveal in Finder and Copy options are in the More menu. Settings, Files has the GIF options too.
  • Command Z in Review takes back zoom, cursor and trim changes. A slider drag is one step.
  • The Space key now types a space in the watermark text field. Before, it started playback. Space still plays and pauses the video in other places.
  • Hint text is easier to read.
  • The Gallery and Settings sidebars work with the arrow keys, and VoiceOver reads the selected item.
  • In the Gallery, click to select an item. Press Space for Quick Look, Return to open, the arrow keys to move and Command Delete to move to the Trash. You can drag an item to other apps.
  • Gallery search now also finds the kind, the date and the file names. When nothing matches, a Clear Search button shows.
  • The recovery prompt after a recording that did not stop is clearer. Its choices are Review, Save to Gallery and Discard.
  • Text annotations now open a text field where you click. Before, a dialog asked for the text.
  • The annotation tools have clear names for help and VoiceOver.
  • The Setup Guide has two new steps, Record and Side Widget, and clear Next and Done buttons.
  • The Logging choices in Settings have clear names.

Hololith 1.0.5

Build 8 ·

  • You can now choose the display for the side widget. Go to Settings, General, Side widget, Show on. Select Automatic or one of your displays.
  • Hololith keeps your display choice when the display order changes. If the display is not connected, the widget uses Automatic. When the display connects again, the widget goes back to it.
  • Two displays of the same model show with different names in the list.
  • There are seven new cursor styles: Bold arrow, Bold hand, Blue arrow, Click burst, Flame, Candy stripe and Glove.
  • The new cursors are vector drawings, so they stay sharp on a 5K display and in exports at all sizes. The cursor size setting changes their size.
  • The Click burst cursor shows short rays at the tip when you click.
  • The cursor style control now shows a preview of each style. Click a preview to select the style.
  • With Cursor effects off, the new styles go into the recording as you record. With Cursor effects on, Review and export draw them.
  • VoiceOver reads the name of each cursor style and of the display control.

Hololith 1.0.4

Build 7 ·

  • GIF export now writes each frame to the file as it goes. Before, a long GIF used up to 1 GB of memory. Now it uses about 25 to 50 MB. The frames, the timing and the quality are the same.
  • When you draw on the screen during a recording, Hololith now draws on the video frame directly. This uses less power and memory, and the recording looks the same.
  • If a screen frame does not have the size of the recording, your drawings now scale with the frame. Before, such a frame could be cut off.
  • History now loads in the background when Hololith starts, so the app is ready sooner.
  • The Software Update installer now starts without a wait on the main thread.
  • The microphone level meter now stops when the recording setup window closes. Before, the microphone could stay on.
  • Hololith now writes the pointer track of a recording to disk in blocks. This gives fewer disk writes during a long recording.
  • The side widget uses less power when you move the pointer.
  • The Gallery no longer checks the disk for each item each time it redraws.
  • VoiceOver now says when a recording runs, and each Gallery card has a full description.
  • With Reduce Motion on, the menu bar icon does not pulse during a recording.
  • Internal fixes for Swift concurrency. The build now has no warnings.

Hololith 1.0.3

Build 6 ·

  • When you close the Review window with the close button, the video stops playing. Before, the sound could go on with no window, and the Review window stayed in memory.
  • Cancel during an export with webcam blur now stops at once and leaves no partial file.
  • A recording with a microphone or system audio file that has no sound no longer gives an empty audio track in Review and in exports.
  • Hololith now removes old temporary recording files while it runs, not only when it starts, so it uses less disk space over time.
  • If the microphone file cannot be written, for example when the disk is full, Hololith now writes the error to the log.
  • Hololith now stops checking for the Screen Recording permission after ten minutes, and checks again at the next request. This uses less power.
  • The webcam recording state is now safe to read while the camera starts.
  • Internal fixes for Swift concurrency.

Hololith 1.0.2

Build 5 ·

  • Software Update no longer offers the same version again after it installs. Before, the new version started but the installer did not hear back from it, so after one minute it put the old version back.
  • The Recover interrupted recording prompt now shows only for a recording that did not stop. Before, it showed on each launch for recordings that had stopped normally.
  • When you answer the Recover prompt, it does not come back for that recording. Later now keeps the recording in History.
  • A recording that could not start no longer leaves files behind.
  • The menu bar icon uses much less power while you record.
  • Hololith makes the History poster of a new recording in the background, so the app stays responsive when you stop a recording.
  • The Gallery loads small thumbnails in the background and uses much less memory.
  • Recording at a lower quality than the display reuses its frame buffers, which uses less memory and power.
  • The Review window and the teleprompter redraw less often.

Hololith 1.0.1

Build 4 ·

  • The webcam is in sync with your voice again. In Review and in exports, the webcam was about a third of a second late when the microphone started before the camera.
  • New recordings start the webcam file and the microphone file at their own first sample, so they line up within one frame.
  • In Review, the microphone and the system audio now line up with the screen as they do in the export.
  • The Review window now opens at about 85 percent of your screen and fits the video, so the video is much larger on high resolution displays. Hololith remembers the size and place you give it.
  • The zoom and cursor inspector and the webcam look controls are closed when Review opens, so the video has the most room. Show them with the buttons under the timeline and next to the webcam controls.
  • A screen recording made after a webcam recording no longer takes the microphone start time of the earlier recording.

Hololith 1.0.0

Build 3 ·

  • Hololith 1.0 is here.
  • The Allow buttons for Accessibility, Screen Recording, Camera and Microphone now open the right page of System Settings. Before, macOS said that no application could open the link.
  • Hololith now shows the macOS permission prompt first, and opens System Settings only when the prompt cannot show.
  • When the recorded display disconnects or Screen Recording is turned off during a recording, Hololith stops the recording and keeps what it recorded.
  • A second press of Record or Stop no longer starts or stops a recording two times.
  • Stopping a recording with system audio no longer makes Hololith wait while the audio file finishes.
  • Do Not Disturb turns off again when a recording cannot start.
  • An automatic update check no longer opens the update window during a recording.
  • The microphone meter in the preroll sheet uses less power.

Hololith 0.1.0

Build 2 ·

  • Hololith is now signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it without a security warning.
  • Hololith can now update itself. It checks for a new version shortly after launch and once a day, shows what changed, and asks before it installs. Turn the checks off in Settings, General.
  • After this update, macOS may ask again for Camera, Microphone and Screen Recording. Allow them once.
  • The webcam trail is now a soft gradient that matches the export, and it is more subtle.
  • Pick the display, the webcam and the microphone in the side widget, the preroll sheet or Settings, Recording.
  • New cursor styles: macOS arrow, large arrow, soft dot and ring, and a color for the dot and the ring.
  • Click highlights now have a ripple ring, a filled pulse, a soft glow or a double ring, in any color, with an optional second color for right clicks.
  • Click marks in recordings without cursor effects now show at the click, also in Hololith windows, and no second arrow shows.
